Glasgow, known as Scotland's cultural capital, is a destination rich with history and heritage, stunning architecture, scenic beauty, cultural activity, and entertainment. Glasgow originally prospered through its trade of sugar, cotton, and tobacco with the American colonies. As it embraced the industrial revolution, its reputation for quality shipbuilding spread throughout the world, and Glasgow became known as the "Second City of the British Empire." Today the city has undergone a transformation and rejuvenation bringing it into the modern century, while still maintaining its history. With over 20 museums and galleries, including the world-famous Burrell Collection, visitors can explore the city's vast cultural and industrial heritage. Many of the galleries and museums offer free admission, giving additional incentive for them not to be missed! Glasgow's carefully preserved Victorian architecture is among the finest you will ever see and has earned the city the honour through 1999 as being the UK City of Architecture and Design. The name Glasgow is derived from the Gaelic "glas chu," meaning "dear green place." Appropriately so since Glasgow now boasts over 70 parks and gardens. Each park has its own fascinating attraction, such as a stroll through Kelvingrove Park, which brings you to the wonderful Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum. Victoria Park takes visitors back in time with its world famous Fossil Grove. Not to be forgotten is the shopping experience in Glasgow, second only to London, including the famous Sauchiehall Street, the chic Princes Square, and the new Buchanan Galleries. However, shopping in Glasgow does not only include the brand name stores. The individuality of areas like Merchant City and the trendy West End offer the unique art stores, antique shops, and craft centres. Glasgow is becoming known as a gourmet's paradise. After a long day in meetings, step outside at night to enjoy all of the restaurants Glasgow has to offer. Whether it is an award-winning formal restaurant, a continental-style sidewalk cafe, or a friendly local pub, you will find something appetising to meet every craving and budget. From award-winning museums to country parks, from Victorian architecture to historic villages, from unique shopping facilities to top-quality restaurants, the choices are endless. We look forward to seeing you in Glasgow in 2001! | |||||||
