ISMRT-MC1
Overview
This masterclass series will introduce the MR physics of advanced brain
MR imaging including functional MRI, diffusion MRI, and perfusion MRI.
Part I of this series will discuss functional MRI.
Target Audience
Radiographers, technologists, radiologists, scientists, and anyone who
can benefit from the MR physics of advanced brain MR imaging.
Educational Objectives
As a result of attending this course, participants should be able to:
- Explain the basic physics and physiology of functional MRI;
- Explain the clinical applications of functional MRI; and
- Explain the challenges of functional MRI.

The Basics of Functional MRI
Avery Berman
Keywords: Contrast mechanisms: fMRI, Neuro: Brain
function
In this lecture, we’ll learn about the physiological and
biophysical processes underlying functional MRI (fMRI), the
pulse sequences used to perform fMRI, and example
applications in clinical imaging and research.
After attending the session, attendees will be able to:
- Understand how brain
physiology (blood flow and metabolism) is closely linked
to neuronal activity
- Understand the Blood
Oxygenation Level-Dependent (BOLD) MRI contrast
mechanism
- Understand the
changes in brain physiology that give rise to the BOLD
fMRI signal
- Understand common
acquisition strategies for imaging the BOLD fMRI
response
- Recognize typical
fMRI experimental designs
