Overview
This masterclass series will introduce the MR physics of advanced brain
MR imaging including functional MRI, diffusion MRI, and perfusion MRI.
Part 3 of this series will discuss perfusion MRI.
Target Audience
Radiographers, technologists, radiologists, scientists, and anyone who
can benefit from the MR physics of advanced brain MR imaging.
Educational Objectives
As a result of attending this course, participants should be able to:
- Explain the basic physics and physiology of perfusion MRI;
- Explain the clinical applications of perfusion MRI; and
- Explain the challenges of perfusion MRI.

The Basics of Perfusion MRI
Avery Berman
Keywords: Contrast mechanisms: Perfusion, Neuro:
Cerebrovascular
In this lecture, we’ll learn about the physiological and
biophysical processes underlying the contrast mechanisms of
perfusion imaging, the pulse sequences used to image them,
and example applications in clinical imaging and research.
After attending the session, attendees will be able to:
- Understand the basic
physiological parameters of interest in perfusion
imaging
- Understand why
perfusion is important to measure
- Understand the
principles underlying the major techniques for imaging
perfusion, including contrast-based perfusion imaging
and arterial spin labelling
- Compare each
technique’s strengths and weaknesses in clinical imaging
and research
