Overview
mTBI affects millions of people world-wide and causes long-term physical
and cognitive disability. mTBI is a complex neurological disease with
several neuropathological processes including neuroinflammation, altered
brain drainage systems and progression to neurodegeneration.
Conventional MR imaging is not sensitive to subtle brain alterations or
white matter disruptions, and findings represent the “tip of the
iceberg”. In this plenary, we draw attention to this debilitating
disease, the urgent need to find clinically relevant MR biomarkers and
implement advanced MR techniques that will benefit patients with mTBI.
Target Audience
All members at any stage of career or area of expertise will benefit
from this plenary that describes the extent of burden and the
devastating consequences of mTBI. mTBI is underdiagnosed and still lacks
a MR biomarker making it hard to diagnose the extent of clinical damage
and prognosis.
Educational Objectives
As a result of attending this course, participants should be able to:
- Describe causes and clinical symptoms of mild traumatic brain injuries
(mTBI);
- Compare MRI methods used for mTBI research in preclinical models and
clinical cohorts; and
- Discuss how novel MRI techniques could benefit the diagnosis and
treatment follow-up of mTBI.
