S04  07:00 - 07:50 Moderators:  Emily McWalter, Sander Brinkhof

Skill Level: Intermediate

Session Number: S-Tu-06

Overview
These sessions provide an overview of emerging methods to image a variety of musculoskeletal tissues: muscle, articular cartilage, bone, tendon, ligaments, and meniscus. Each sunrise session will begin with an overview of the basic MR physical concepts of the emerging techniques along with a summary of their current state of development, validation or implementation. This is followed by a clinically focused presentation on the utility of these methods for clinical research or patient care.

Target Audience
Trainees, researchers, and clinicians with an interest in the technical aspects and clinical applications of emerging MR methods for a variety of musculoskeletal tissues.

Educational Objectives
As a result of attending this course, participants should be able to:
-Describe the technical principles of a variety of emerging MRI methods for MSK imaging;
-Summarize how far these emerging methods have progressed from development to validation or implementation; and
-Discuss potential areas for clinical application of these techniques.

  Physiologic Articular Cartilage Imaging
Stefan Zbyn
Compositional MRI methods provide unique capabilities for imaging of changes in cartilage physiology, which are otherwise invisible using conventional morphological imaging methods. This presentation will provide an overview of methods for noninvasive imaging of cartilage such as T2 and T relaxation time mapping, delayed gadolinium-enhanced MRI of cartilage (dGEMRIC), glycosaminoglycan specific chemical exchange saturation transfer (gagCEST), diffusion tensor imaging (DTI), and sodium imaging. The presentation will discuss technical principles, validation studies, advantages, challenges and recent developments of each technique.

07:25

  Clinical Articular Cartilage Imaging with Emerging MR Methods
Pia Jungmann
By attending this talk, the audience should be able to chose appropriate imaging techniques for morphological cartilage imaging with respect to different joints, to chose and interpret MR pulse sequences for morphological cartilage evaluation appropriately, to know advantages and limitations of quantitative cartilage imaging techniques in the context of clinical applications and research possibilities and to interpret findings thoughtfully regarding pre- and postoperative cartilage imaging.
