MRI of the Placenta & Fetus: Challenges & Opportunities
Member-Initiated Symposium ORGANIZERS: Oliver Wieben, Katarina Steding Ehrenborg
Monday, 13 May 2019
Session Number: MIS-03
Overview This Symposium was proposed by the Placenta & Fetus study group. This symposium will start with the clinical motivation for improved quantitative MRI during pregnancy, particularly in current and emerging fetal interventions and metrics needed to them. Subsequently, innovative qMRI methodology currently used in research is discussed, followed by presentations on the role of non-human primate research in this vulnerable patient population. The last presentations cover cutting edge approaches to deal with the unique motion challenges. The symposium ties in well with several sessions at ISMRM 2019: Standardization in MRI: Why Is It So Challenging? (Plenary); Preclinical MRI: Methods & Applications, Quantitative MRI, Imaging Without Gadolinium (educational). It is also timely as the topic of quantitative MRI is gaining momentum in personalized/precision medicine (e.g. QUIBA); fetal MRI is playing a role in Zika; and the field of placenta and fetal MRI is growing quickly (new study group, first ISMRM sponsored workshop, new SCMR workgroup, many trainee members). Target Audience Clinicians and scientists with an interest in methodology, translational research, and clinical applications of quantitative MRI during pregnancy. Educational Objectives As a result of attending this course, participants should be able to: - Demonstrate knowledge about the current and emerging fetal interventions and metrics needed to guide future interventions; - Summarize MRI-based quantification approaches used in fetal and placental MRI; - Identify challenges in the validation of MRI-based quantification methods; and - Demonstrate knowledge about cutting edge motion correction schemes used to address unique motion artefacts in placenta and fetal MRI. |
