Completing the Circle: Moving Multi-Parametric Neuro MRI into Clinical Practice & Trials
Member-Initiated Symposium ORGANIZERS: Julien Cohen-Adad, Hugo Vrenken, Francesco Grussu
Wednesday, 15 May 2019
Session Number: MIS-13
Overview This Symposium was proposed by the White Matter study group. This session will address the topic of translating advanced MRI from research applications to clinical trials and practice with an emphasis on brain and spinal cord white matter injury and disease. Quantitative mapping of tissue properties is nearly as old as MRI, yet diagnosis in neurological applications still often relies on subjective assessments of non-quantitative, contrast-weighted images. Multi-parametric mapping with MRI has demonstrated a clear role in basic science and clinical research to quantify an ever-expanding variety of tissue properties. Continued progress within the field has offered improved reliability, efficiency, and automation, but significant logistical and practical issues surround adoption beyond research scenarios. While some of these technologies already have been successfully used as biomarkers in clinical trials, their translation into clinical practice remains overall limited. Target Audience Scientists and clinicians with interest in translating and integrating cutting-edge MRI quantitative biomarkers for medical applications. Educational Objectives As a result of attending this course, participants should be able to: - Identify the advantages of quantitative and multi-parametric MRI techniques compared to conventional MRI; - List opportunities and challenges along the translational pipeline of quantitative and multi-parametric MRI in neurological applications; and -Demonstrate the utility as outcome measures of quantitative MRI metrics in clinical trials and clinical MRI. |
