Session Number: M-02

Overview
This session will provide an overview of pediatric cardiovascular MRI including clinical need, technical challenges, state-of-the-art practice, and research techniques.

Target Audience
- Physicists and engineers who wish to obtain a basic understanding of the clinical need for pediatric imaging and its technical challenges and limitations; and
- Physicists and clinicians who wish to acquire an understanding of current clinical state-of-the-art practice, technical advances and research techniques.

Educational Objectives
As a result of attending this course, participants should be able to:
- Explain the clinical need for cardiovascular MRI in children and the inherent challenges involved;
- Describe acceleration techniques commonly used in cardiovascular MRI in children;
- Describe the advantages and disadvantages of motion correction and motion compensation techniques currently used in cardiovascular MRI in children; and
- Describe current clinical state-of-the-art and research techniques.

This presentation will provide an overview of fast imaging methods used for pediatric cardiovascular MR. Specifically, it will focus on: New developments in data undersampling paired with advanced image reconstruction, non-Cartesian acquisitions, rapid free-breathing methods, multi-parametric imaging approaches, and applications of machine learning for rapid imaging.

Pediatric cardiovascular magnetic resonance (CMR) imaging is challenging due to bulk, respiratory, and cardiac motion. This lecture will cover key concepts in motion correction, including sedation, electrocardiogram (ECG) gating, cardiac self-gating, respiratory navigators, respiratory self-gating, and the state-of-the-art comprehensive free-breathing 3-dimensional (3D) CMR imaging.
