Session Sub-Topic: Sustainable MRI: Pathways to a Carbon-Neutral Research Society
Member-Initiated Symposium
ORGANIZERS: Ruth Oliver, Rajiv Ramasawmy, Simon Walker-Samuel
Session Number: MIS-18 Overview With a growing concern about climate change, it is imperative that large bodies commit to sustainable policy. The United Nations Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change 2018 report recommends nations becoming carbon-neutral by 2030, and it is arguable that we in the ISMRM, and the broader scientific community, should show leadership by example in minimizing our environmental impact. In 2019, climate-conscious initiatives were enacted at ISMRM: an open meeting was held to discuss the ways in which climate change could affect the research society, and the ISMRM established an ad-hoc committee on sustainability. For ISMRM 2020, the Junior Fellows have chosen to organize a session on the current impact of MRI on the environment and the organizing committee have included an opt-in carbon-offsetting program for travel to Sydney. This application wishes to build on this momentum and initiate a discussion on a potential ten-year plan for the research society. This symposium will provide a platform for the members to learn about their climate impact, as individuals and as a research society, from invited speakers in academia, industry and the ISMRM. It will feature an open forum: inviting feedback, concerns, and ideas to begin forming the pathways towards sustainable MRI. Target Audience This will be one of the first sessions to address the sustainability of ISMRM. We invite all attendees, from the concerned to the mildly interested. Educational Objectives As a result of attending this course, participants should be able to: Upon completion of this course, participants should be able to: - Identify the fundamental contributions to climate change; - Describe the current footprint of MRI research and the ISMRM; - Recognize current and future sustainability programs run by commercial vendors; and - Discuss potential strategies to reach a carbon-neutral society.
