Session Topic: Novel clinical applications of CMR
Session Sub-Topic: MRI in Cardio-Oncology
Weekday Course
ORGANIZERS: Aleksandra Radjenovic, Tim Leiner
Skill Level: Basic to Advanced
Session Number: Th-02 Overview Cardio-oncology is a new cardiology sub-specialty focused on early detection of cardiovascular complications of cancer treatments with the aim of improving early detection of treatment-induced cardiovascular complications as well as their prevention and treatment. Current state of cardio-oncology in different regions will be discussed (including guidelines and training schemes), as well as the activities of international organizations. MRI has emerged as a promising tool for the assessment of treatment-induced changes in cardiac morphology, tissue composition, and function. This course will highlight the current role of MRI in cardio-oncology and outline the potential of further developments in this area, aimed at reducing the increasing burden of cardiovascular complications in patients receiving cancer therapies. Target Audience Basic scientists and clinicians interested in MRI methods that can explore and assess the effects of oncological treatments on cardiovascular morphology, tissue composition, and function. Educational Objectives As a result of attending this course, participants should be able to: - Explain the scope of the new cardiac sub-specialty of cardio-oncology and current clinical practice of this emerging discipline in different countries; - Define the current role of MRI in cardio-oncology; - Predict future opportunities for the development of MRI tools for elucidating the mechanisms of cardio-toxicity of cancer treatments; and - Evaluate the potential of MRI as a tool for improving identification and prevention of short and long-term cardiovascular complications in patients receiving cancer therapies.
