Overview
Muscle MRI, and musculoskeletal MRI in general, is slowly emerging as a disease monitoring biomarker. However, reaching the level of using quantitative MRI (qMRI) outcomes as surrogate endpoints is not an obvious step. In fact, many innovative methods never reach application in the practice or in clinical trials, neither as clinical and diagnostic tools, nor as surrogate endpoints. The rarity and variability of some types of disease, the challenge of standardization between sites, on top of other issues, complicate and delay the translation of quantitative methods.
In this symposium, we aim to give a global perspective about the actual demands of producing a robust qMRI biomarker, be it for a clinical study or for a pilot industry study and to highlight the current limits that restrict Muscle/MSK qMRI outputs from being more used.
The MIS talks will cover different aspects starting from the clinical perspective, the application demands of a large study, the demands of the end user and the global perspective of quantitative MRI.
The session will consist of: 2 talks of 15 min, 4 of 10 min, and a panel discussion (45 min) with MR scientists, industry representatives and radiologists.

Target Audience
MRI method developers interested in translation; researchers from pharma industry; Radiologists performing clinical studies

Educational Objectives
As a result of attending this course, participants should be able to:
To understand issues, challenges and characteristics of different types of biomarkers. To learn how to bring a Muscle/ MSK MR biomarker to a level that is useful and applicable in studies and clinical practice. To learn the different perspectives for an eventual application to the clinic, to pilot studies or to clinical trials.
