Session Number: P-02

Overview
In contrast to all the huge cohorts we have, we also have many rare diseases, small patient cohorts, and animal studies with inherently small “N.” How can we get the most from these MRI data? The focus of this session will be an overview of available tools ranging from multicenter databases to case studies, demonstrating how can we use these data most effectively. By increasing power for inherently underpowered studies and using imaging to reduce the numbers even further, this will showcase how to maximize the minimum.

Target Audience
This plenary session is aimed at scientists and physicians (including Ph.D. students and physicians-in-training) working with limited amounts of data seeking to learn about approaches for study design and analysis. Experts from inside and outside the MRI community will share the latest on statistical and design approaches that are less known within our field.

Educational Objectives
As a result of attending this course, participants should be able to:
- Identify the challenges posed by small data sets and critically appraise published literature in this area;
- Explain alternate statistical approaches and study designs to make the most of limited data; and
- Recognize the possibilities of employing these strategies in clinical research to maximize the return on small N studies.

In this presentation, we will discuss approaches to children and adults with rare diseases in the clinical and research setting and review how collaboration with individual patients and families as well as international collaboration can improve outcomes. With the International PPB/DICER1 Registry as one example, we will discuss the use of disease-specific registries as one mechanism for data collation and dissemination, family education and research.
