Overview
The process from research idea to clinical implementation isn’t straightforward, and it often involves IP and commercialization. This course will provide an introduction to the basics of intellectual property and commercialization combined with stories from our community of successful paths to commercialization. Additionally, the course will address regulatory aspects of commercialization. The course will conclude with a discussion of the value of a patent and the impacts of patents on open science.

Target Audience
Scientists, medical physicists, engineers, radiologists, and technologists at all career levels interested in the patent and commercialization processes.

Educational Objectives
As a result of attending this course, participants should be able to:
- Explain the process of patenting work with an international perspective;
- Assess the impacts of patenting work; and
- Compare different paths from research method to commercialization.

This presentation outlines the basic concepts of intellectual property and patents.  In addition, it provides examples of how to disclose inventions and work with institutional technology transfer offices to file patent applications.
08:30   Lessons Learned in the Journey from MRI Invention to Standard of Care

View the Presentation

Richard Ehman

Employing MR elastography as a case study, this presentation identifies lessons that were learned in the trajectory from invention to wide use in clinical practice.  First published in 1995, MRE is now a standard of clinical practice, deployed on over 2000 MRI systems around the world.  This presentation reviews strategies for addressing hurdles and opportunities, technical and regulatory challenges, and approaches for obtaining clinical buy-in for new MRI-based techniques.
