Session Number: S-W-08

Overview
This educational course provides an overview of opportunities and challenges involved in combining other modalities with MRI, with a focus on in-bore systems including EEG, TMS, ultrasound, PET, linac, and motion tracking hardware.

Target Audience
Scientists and clinicians who want to learn about hardware and methods involved in multimodal imaging.

Educational Objectives
As a result of attending this course, participants should be able to:
- Summarize the state-of-the-art technical aspects of multimodal MRI;
- Recognize the challenges and opportunities with multimodal systems and tools that can be combined with MRI; and
- Identify the engineering aspects involved in EEG, TMS, ultrasound, motion tracking, PET, and linacs.

08:00   MRI & TMS

Olivier Reynaud
This lecture will highlight the very different physics of MRI and TMS, and will give the audience a brief introduction to the characteristics of TMS and TMS experiments outside any MRI environment. The challenges of performing TMS in a magnetic environment will then be laid out, and appropriate solutions to the various challenges to overcome explained. The audience will be presented with the current state of applications in concurrent TMS-MRI. Hopefully the interested listener will leave the talk with all the tools necessary to setup his own multimodal study.

Transcranial focused ultrasound (tFUS) is an emerging technology that has ablative and nonablative applications for neurological and psychiatric diseases. As a neuromodulation tool, tFUS offers high precision targeting, stimulation of deep brain structures, and focal drug or gene delivery via blood-brain barrier opening (BBBO). MR-acoustic radiation force imaging (MR-ARFI) and functional MRI (fMRI) add capabilities of real-time feedback on tFUS beam location and functional monitoring of FUS in action. Advanced MRI contrasts provide tFUS safety assessment. In this talk, I will review these methods and discuss how they are applied to modulate brain function in humans and animals.
