Overview
This course will review the importance of science in sound policymaking in healthcare and provide strategies for scientists, clinicians, and research institutions to actively engage relevant stakeholders and policy makers to build support for health research. Best practices for science advocacy and effective science communication will be reviewed. A panel discussion will follow all three talks.

Target Audience
Radiologists, scientists, medical physicists, engineers, and technologists at all career levels interested in science policy and public engagement.

Educational Objectives
As a result of attending this course, participants should be able to:
- Explain the role of science in evidence-based decision making and sound policy making;
- Relate how to effectively communicate your science with policy makers and the broader community; and
- Show to actively engage with policy makers to help to inform science policy.

Effective communication plays an important role in disseminating scientific discoveries. Social media offers researchers unique opportunities to promote and foster collaborations. In this talk, the speaker will discuss (1) benefits and pitfalls of using social media in science communication, (2) ways to promote your science and cultivate your online presence, and (3) strategies to disseminate cutting-edge discoveries with members of the public. The speaker will demonstrate these topics using both research data and real world examples from YouTube and other platforms. After attending this talk, the participants will be able to create effective social media posts about their research.
