Overview
The grant-writing session in 2021 was well-received, and in 2022, there was a session on planning diverse clinical trials. Building on these sessions, 2023 will have a session on how to successfully manage and lead scientific projects.

Target Audience
All researchers (PIs, post-doctoral fellows) interested in learning how to successfully manage grants and all the challenges associated.

Educational Objectives
As a result of attending this course, participants should be able to:
- Manage scientific projects to achieve goals on time; and
- Assemble the team and create the environment to succeed.

07:00   Creating a Productive & Happy Lab Environment Hanzhang Lu

Keywords: Transferable skills: Project management

I will discuss my experiences and lessons on how to keep a positive lab environment. As the PI of a lab, it is critical to maintain a stable workforce. Constant turnover of personnel can lead to a waste of time and lower scientific productivity. A positive lab environment is important to attract and retain talent. I will discuss issues such as different roles of lab members, assignment of projects, determination of authorship, a balance between conducting one’s own study and helping others, and compromises that both the PI and the trainee need to make to work together as a team.
07:30   Practicalities of Cross-Institution & Cross-Country Collaborations Leticia Rittner

Keywords: Transferable skills: Project management

Cross-country collaborations can be challenging, but the rewards of working with diverse teams are significant. In this talk, I will share my experience and lessons learned from collaborating across borders on grant-funded projects. I will discuss practicalities such as building relationships across cultures and managing projects across time zones and language barriers. I will emphasize the importance of including students in the collaboration and provide suggestions on how to do so effectively. Our aim is to provide practical guidance to researchers embarking on cross-country collaborations, so they can avoid common pitfalls and maximize the benefits of working with global partners.
