Joint MRI & Musculoskeletal Pain
C. Kwoh
Keywords: Musculoskeletal: Knee, Musculoskeletal: Joints, Cross-organ: Ageing Osteoarthritis is both a disease involving structural damage of joint tissues and an illness, i.e., an individual’s experience of osteoarthritis, with pain being the predominant symptom. MRI has provided evidence that osteoarthritis is a disease of the whole joint manifested by structural damage of joint tissues. The etiology of osteoarthritis pain is complex, however, and multiple methods have been developed to assess pain in osteoarthritis. Evidence of the association of different MRI morphologic features of joint damage and knee pain will be reviewed, starting with a discussion of evidence from cross-sectional studies and continuing with evidence from longitudinal studies. |

Beyond Joints: Psychoradiology & MSK Pain
Qiyong Gong, Nanfang Pan, Yajing Long
Keywords: Neuro: Brain Plasticity, Neuro: Brain connectivity, Neuro: Brain function Musculoskeletal (MSK) pain is highly comorbid with psychiatric disorders, including anxiety, depression, substance use disorders, posttraumatic stress disorder etc, and their comorbid conditions play a significant role in greater disability and mortality associated with chronic MSK pain. While psychoradiology allow the identification of various imaging markers in relation to MSK pain, imaging findings suggest that MSK pain may induce dysfunctional brain network associated with pain inhibition and mood regulation, and nociception correlates with disruption of the limbic network and sensorimotor network, and there are shared pathologies for MSK pain and the related psychiatric disorders. |
