From Basics to Applications: MRI of Neuromodulation Using TMS & FUS
Member-Initiated Session
Sunday, 05 May 2024
Room 325-326
07:45 - 09:45
Session Number: MIS-09
No CME/CE Credit
OVERVIEW:
Neuromodulation has evolved into a powerful tool for investigating
intricate neuronal circuits and treating brain disorders. These
techniques, rooted in physics principles, can be broadly categorized
into three main groups:
1. Electromagnetic stimulation, (transcranial magnetic stimulation
(TMS), transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS), transcranial
alternating current stimulation (tACS), and deep brain stimulation
(DBS)).
2. Ultrasonic stimulation (focused ultrasound (FUS).
3. Optical stimulation (optogenetics).
MRI is assuming an increasingly pivotal role in (i) understanding the
underlying mechanisms of these neuromodulation techniques, and (ii)
interpreting the variable clinical responses among patients. MRI can now
be integrated with these neuromodulation methods to observe the
immediate, short-term, and long-term brain responses to neuromodulation
interventions.
Our Member-Initiated Tutorial will place particular emphasis on TMS and
FUS, exploring three key areas:
1. Basics of TMS and FUS.
2. What can MRI bring to TMS/FUS and vice versa.
3. Applications of combined TMS/FUS and MRI in Neuroscience and Clinical
Practice.
This proposed session is dedicated to educating the ISMRM community
about MRI of neuromodulation. We have gathered a diverse panel of seven
speakers representing different backgrounds, career stages, and gender
perspectives to serve as faculty in this session.
TARGET AUDIENCE:
AS A RESULT OF ATTENDING THIS COURSE, PARTICIPANTS SHOULD BE ABLE TO:
- Define TMS and explain how is it applied to the brain and most
relevant applications in neurology, psychiatry and neuroscience;
- Explain how the combination of MRI techniques and TMS can help us to
understand the physiology and pathology of the brain;
- Describe the basic mechanisms of focused ultrasound (FUS) when used as
a neuromodulation technique and explain how is it applied to the brain
and most relevant applications in neurology, psychiatry and
neuroscience; and
- Explain how the combination of MRI techniques and FUS can help us to
understand the physiology and pathology of the brain.
