ISMRM Society Awards
The ISMRM bestows annually a number of awards at the behest of its members and their nominations. These honors reflect the will of the society to recognize those who have contributed greatly to the purposes of the society and to the field of magnetic resonance in general. The recipients of each award are listed on their corresponding pages linked below.
The ISMRM gold medal is awarded to basic and clinical scientists in recognition of major research contributions to the field of magnetic resonance within the scope of the Society, including, but not limited to:
- Fundamental scientific discoveries
- Development of novel techniques
- Insights or elucidations of phenomena which may have been previously identified
- Reduction to practice of techniques which may have been previously identified
- Implementation of new applications which may have been previously identified
- Training or mentoring of other researchers
The ISMRM Distinguished Service Medal is awarded for outstanding contributions to the operation, effectiveness, or good reputation of the Society. This includes, but is not limited to, extensive service to the Society as an officer, board member, editor, committee chair or member, or as an individual member.
The distinction of Fellow of the ISMRM (FISMRM) is conferred on those who have made a significant and substantial contribution to research in a field within the Society’s purposes, who have contributed in a significant manner to the development of the Society and/or any of the Predecessor Societies, who have made a significant contribution to education in MR, and/or who contributed to the field in its clinical or scientific development.
Honorary membership of the ISMRM may be conferred upon members or nonmembers of the Society in recognition of major—singular, extensive, or sustained—achievements in the field of magnetic resonance.
The ISMRM Junior Fellow Program was established to recognize outstanding researchers at an early stage in their careers, with an established and long-term commitment to the ISMRM. Junior Fellowship may be maintained for up to ten (10) years as long as ISMRM membership remains current.
Young Investigator Awards (YIA)
The Society sponsors three Young Investigator Awards:
- The I.I. Rabi Award, given for original research contributions in the basic science of magnetic resonance, which include reports of new MR methodologies and understanding of MR signals, aimed at either human or animal subjects. Examples include manuscripts reporting new hardware, novel pulse sequences, biophysical or signal models, or data analysis techniques;
- The W.S. Moore Award, given for original research contributions in the clinical science of magnetic resonance, which include studies of applications of established MR methodologies, using either human or animal subjects. Examples include manuscripts reporting new applications of MR contrast agents, optimization of scanning protocols, new clinical applications of MRI, or results of clinical trials; and
- The Prince-Meaney Award, given for original research contributions in the translational science of magnetic resonance, which include studies that help move scientific discoveries from the laboratory into real-world practice, leading to improved human health.
The Young Investigator Award applications are judged on the basis of significance and novelty of the work, quality of the written manuscript, and—for the evaluation of the finalists—the quality of the oral and written presentations.
