2023 E. K. Zavoisky Stipend Program

The ISMRM invites applications for stipends from the E. K. Zavoisky Program, established to support the attendance of scientists and clinicians who reside in financially restricted countries and who have limited personal income to attend the 2023 ISMRM & ISMRT Annual Meeting & Exhibition. The program is named in honor of E. K. Zavoisky, pioneer in MR research from the former USSR. Those applicants who are first authors on the Proceedings submission will be given priority. Who Should Apply?

Scientists and clinicians who reside in financially restricted countries and do not have access to the financial means to attend the 2023 Annual Meeting may apply. 2023 ISMRM membership is required by 31 December 2022 at 23:59 UTC (see your local time above). If you are not a member, you will need to complete the membership application process on or before that deadline in order to be considered for an educational stipend. Current members will need to pay their 2023 membership dues by the same deadline. Application to the Zavoisky stipend program is incorporated into the online abstract submission process.

Restrictions:

Applicants eligible for the Educational Stipend Program (undergraduate and graduate students and postdoctoral and medical trainees) are not eligible for the Zavoisky Program.

Application Requirements:

Application to the E. K. Zavoisky Stipend program this year is incorporated into the online abstract submission process. It is mandatory that applicants complete the application on the ISMRM abstract submission website, which will require:

  • ISMRM membership number (if available);
  • Supervisor’s name and contact information (Institution and email address);
  • Abstract (first authors will be given preference)

In addition, please email the following to zavoisky23@ismrm.org:

  • A copy of the electronic confirmation of your online abstract submission (available on the abstract submission site);
  • A letter of application; containing the name and contact information of your supervisor, including email address;
  • Your curriculum vitae;
  • ISMRM Membership (stipend awards are dispersed to ISMRM members only).

About E. K. Zavoisky

E. K. Zavoisky, from Kazan, Tatarstan, is nowadays acknowledged as the inventor of electron spin resonance. There is also strong support for the thesis that he was the first to observe an NMR signal as early as 1941, but he could not detect the signal reproducibly with the very basic apparatus he was able to build with the limited means available to him.

Due to the political situation at that time, Zavoisky’s work remained largely unnoticed in the West. Although unquestionably the first to observe spin resonance, the Nobel Prize Committee did not further consider his contribution due to the lack of follow-up papers and his move to other fields.

It is interesting to note that the C.V. of Zavoisky explicitly reports his first trip to an international conference (1961). There is little doubt that the history of spin resonance would be seen from a different perspective if Zavoisky had been able to pursue his work within the awareness of an international scientific community.

It seems, therefore, to be more than appropriate to name a program established to help scientists from around the world to communicate their achievements in the memory of E. K. Zavoisky.
