Message from the
President
Joint Annual Meeting
ISMRM-ESMRMB |
Peter Jezzard, Ph.D.
2013-14 ISMRM President |
ISMRM and ESMRMB are looking forward to inviting
delegates to the meeting in Milan. We had a record number of abstract
submissions this year, totaling 6480, which augurs well for a successful Annual
Meeting. Annual Meeting Program Chair, Derek Jones, has worked tirelessly
over the past year to ensure that the best possible scientific interactions can
occur during the meeting. A particularly noteworthy new initiative is the
"Newbies Reception" to which all first time attendees will be invited and will
be able to network with more established members of the Society. This
initiative has resulted from a "Trainee Working Advisory Group" that Derek set up
at the
Salt Lake City meeting and that enabled the ISMRM leadership to
gain valuable face-to-face feedback from a spectrum of trainee
members (including several who had never attended an ISMRM
Annual Meeting before). The feedback that we got was that. . .read more

Bill Edelstein in Aberdeen |
Many of you
will already be aware of the sad death of Bill Edelstein in
February 2014. Bill was a pioneer in our field and was also
a Gold Medal winner of the Society. Here, Jim Hutchison,
Tom Redpath and Glyn Johnson, co-authors on Bill's seminal
1980 spin-warp paper, provide some reminiscences of their
time together in Aberdeen:
Recollections of Jim Hutchison, Tom Redpath and Glyn Johnson
Bill,
recently married to Fiona, arrived in Aberdeen in September
1977 to begin a post-doctoral position with Jim Hutchison in
the Department of Biomedical Physics, University of
Aberdeen. Following a BS in Physics from the University of
Illinois, and a PhD from Harvard (coincidentally under the
supervision of Robert Pound) Bill had spent three years as a
post-doc at the University of Glasgow searching in vain for
gravity waves. NMR imaging (Bill hated what he considered
the nonsensical neologism, MRI) was another long shot but
John Mallard had recently persuaded the UK Medical Research
Council to give the Department £30,000 (a derisory £150,000
at current prices) to build a whole body scanner.
Bill was
absolutely the right person to join Jim on the project as he
loved the . . .read

Spotlight on two upcoming ISMRM Workshops! |
ISMRM Workshop on Functional MRI
22-25 June 2014
Charleston, SC, USA |
ISMRM Workshop on Motion Correction
11-14 July 2014
Tromsø, Norway |
An ISMRM Workshop on Functional MRI will be held
22-25 June 2014 in Charleston, South Carolina, USA. The
purpose of the workshop is to inform researchers and
clinicians interested in brain imaging about the latest
advances in the development and application of MR
techniques to probe brain function. Major topics of the
workshop include electrophysiology & neurovascular
coupling, fMRI signal mechanism & biophysics, fMRI
imaging technologies, fast-imaging methods, oxygen
extraction fraction & cerebral metabolic rate of oxygen,
personalized fMRI interpretation, and clinical &
neuroscience prospects of fMRI.
The workshop will feature invited scientific
presentations, proffered papers, and poster sessions. A
Young Investigator Award for which students and
post-doctoral fellows are eligible will be awarded based
on the quality of the presented work and presentation.
The interdisciplinary faculty and broad audience will
ensure that technologies and methodologies are
communicated and shared between radiologists,
neurologists, psychiatrists, neurosurgeons,
neuroscientists, physicists, engineers, physiologists,
trainees, and technologists.
Abstract Deadline: 3 April 2014! |
This summer it is time for the second workshop on
Motion Correction in MRI! Three years ago it was held
in Kitzbühel, Austria, close to the ski slopes. This
time we will be in another mountainous area - in Tromsø,
located in northern Norway.
The workshop will be held between 11-14 July, a
time of the year when the sun never sets. For the
morning of the first day, an overview from a clinical
and physicist's perspectives will be given, followed by
the vendors' views of the status of motion correction
today. In the afternoon it is time to open your laptop
(with Matlab installed, if you have it, otherwise we'll
share) for some hands-on learning of the basic
principles of motion correction. We believe this is a
great opportunity, not the least for students with
little programming experience on the topic, but also for
clinical people who wonder how it's done! The following
days will cover a wide selection of retrospective a
prospective correction methods, including many exciting
MR navigators. Hope to see you there! Bring a sweater
for the midnight walk(s)!
Abstract Deadline: 16 April 2014! |

Spotlight on Diffusion in
Podstrana, Croatia |
The ISMRM workshop on Diffusion as a Probe of Neural Tissue
Microstructure was held 14 - 18 October in the beautiful coastal
Adriatic setting of Podstrana, Croatia. It was the third ISMRM
workshop organized by the Diffusion Study Group in this century
after the meetings in Saint-Malo (2002) and Lake Louise (2005).
The meeting focussed on the nervous system due to the growing
amount of experimental and analytical methods developed
on this topic since the previous meeting 8 years earlier. The
workshop was structured around 24 invited talks, which were
excellent, and 96 proffered poster presentations covering a wide
span of diffusion MRI, from methodology to clinical application.
The workshop was well attended with 175 attendees from around
the globe. The secluded location of the workshop hotel
facilitated mingling and long informal discussions. . . .Read
