Martin Sherriff, B App Sc (MIT), MRT (MR)

Martin’s exposure to MRI began in 1995, where he was fortunate enough to work in a hospital that had an MRI in Brisbane, Australia. It was a small department with all modalities consoles leading into one corridor. When it was quiet in his ‘supposed’ assigned area, he would be that annoying little voice in the back ground, ‘what you doing?’ ‘why?’ ‘last week you did this….’ and so it went on and on and on…

After a couple of years, he ‘graduated’ into MRI and with fantastic teachers/mentors (for which he is very thankful, if you’re one of those who are reading this) who had such diverse knowledge and enthusiasm for learning and development, that he has modelled his own career, goals and learning to.

Martin’s education began in Brisbane at the Queensland University of Technology completing a Bachelor of Applied Science in Medical Imaging in 1994. He passed the first Australian Institute of Radiography’s MRI Accreditation exam in 1998. His continual development and furthering of his education has always foremost to his career by attending local MRI user meetings in Brisbane in the 1990’s, being an active member of the SMRT since 2003, attending many SMRT/ISMRM Annual meetings, co-organised an educational symposium for regional technologists in 2012 and also co-organised the 2014 Western Canada SMRT Regional Meeting.

He has authored and co-authored multiple abstracts to various meetings/conferences and was honored by being successful as 2nd place winner for proffered papers for clinical scope at the 2011 SMRT Annual Meeting in Melbourne. Also, been an invited speaker to numerous local, regional, vendor and national meetings and served on numerous committees and working groups.

The stereotypical Australian travels, and therefore he left Australia in 2000, initially to the UK and then onto Ireland. After almost 2 years in Ireland, he must have thought it was too warm in the emerald isle, so he travelled onto Canada in 2003 and has been there ever since.

Currently, Martin has been the MRI Supervisor at the Alberta Children’s Hospital in Calgary, Alberta, for over 10 years. This keeps him busy, as do his 2 children and volunteering for various community activities.
