About the ISMRT Ghana Division
Ghana, often referred to as the African star, boasts a growing population but faces challenges with a limited number of MRI machines per capita, primarily located in the southern region of the country. Despite these challenges, radiographers and trainees in Ghana have consistently advocated for and actively participated in MRI education.
In 2023, Ghana proudly hosted the inaugural annual conference of the African Chapter of the International Society for Magnetic Resonance in Medicine (ISMRM). Building on this momentum, the ISMRT Future Leaders of Ghana was formed to spearhead the affairs of MRI activities in Ghana for radiographers/technologists, under the umbrella of ISMRT /ISRRT. The successful initial training of the Future Leaders (Ghana) under the mentorship of Kate Negus from Australia and Lydia Sekoli from South Africa. and championed by Isaac Tigbee led to the drafting of a proposal for the formation of the Ghana Division of ISMRT in February 2025.
The Future Leaders Fellows officially began meeting in August 2024, comprising a group of MRI enthusiasts ready to advance the MRI practice in Ghana through education, advocacy and training either in-person or virtually, to improve the standards of MR practice in Ghana. The Division is represented by a Chairman, Vice-Chairperson, and a Secretary. The initial cohort of members of the Division are the 9 Fellows of the Ghana Future Leaders, with an additional 6 members expressing interest in being part of the Division.
Mentors/exec members of the ISMRT Ghana Division have served on the ISMRT board and held various leadership positions over the years.
