Workshops:  The ISMRM Working for You!

In our last edition of the MR Pulse, I described my goal this year of enhancing our sense of “community” throughout the year, including at times outside of the annual meeting. One needs to look no further than our workshop program to identify a great example of how we can enhance this sense of community in the ISMRM.  Our workshop program is thriving; the recent MR safety workshop set record attendance of more than 225 members. Congratulations to the organizing chairs, Titti Owman and Freddy Stahlberg, for conceiving of and leading a great program, and many thanks to the speakers who contributed so much to the workshop. During the safety workshop, we also rolled out our first live twitter coverage of the event, thanks to Greg Brown and his colleagues.   Our annual meeting is a great event, but sometimes the sheer size of the meeting, and the number of parallel sessions, leave our members a bit frustrated, because they were unable to. . .

Rising Stars

This month we are pleased to profile Matthew Middione, the 2012 Young Investigator Award winner of the I. I. Moore Award for clinical science, recently awarded in Melbourne, Australia, at the ISMRM 20th Annual Meeting & Exhibition.

Chemical Shift Induced Phase Errors in Phase Contrast MRI

My first experience with MRI came at California State University, Fresno where I studied for my bachelor’s degree in Biomedical Physics.  There I took an MRI course instructed by Dr. Amir Huda, who also founded the program.  I thoroughly enjoyed the math and physics associated with the formation of the MR signal as well as the image acquisition process learned in the lab portion of the course, in which we got to utilize scanners at the local VA hospital.  I decided to pursue my PhD in Biomedical Physics at the University of California, Los Angeles, where I am currently a 4th year student under the guidance of Dr. Daniel Ennis.  Dr. Ennis has been instrumental in the development of my . . .

Tesla Science Center at Wardenclyffe
ISMRM member, Jeff Duerk, recently sent us an article from CNN regarding efforts lead by Matthew Inman (TheOatmeal.com) to raise cash to buy Nikola Tesla’s last remaining laboratory, with hopes to preserve the facility as a science center and museum honoring “the

father of the electric age.”  As a result of this article as well as other news on this topic, over US$1,000,000 has been raised.  The Tesla Science Center at Wardenclyffe is becoming a reality.  If you would like to know more or donate to this cause, just go to http://www.teslasciencecenter.org/

For History’s Sake

Can you help us?  We need you to pull out the slides, photos, news articles, videos – whatever you have and are willing to share – regarding the history of this society and the evolution of MR.  We want pictures of pioneers in the field, pictures of you and your colleagues over the years, pictures taken at the annual meetings, and pictures of scanners and coils and. . .well, you know what we mean.  We ask that you scan and identify where possible who and what the pictures depict. . .we have people in the Central Office who have been around a long time, but maybe not that long.  Please just send your contributions to history@ismrm.org   If the file sizes are too large, just call the office at +1 510-841-1899 and arrangements will be made for you to upload the photos via the web.  Thank you for your help!
